At least eight illegal miners were killed in a clash with soldiers guarding the AngloGold Ashanti mining site in central Obuasi, the Ghanaian army announced on Sunday.
The incident occurred late Saturday night when a group of approximately 60 armed miners, equipped with rifles, machetes, and pump-action guns, breached the mine’s security perimeter.
A subsequent exchange of gunfire resulted in the deaths of seven miners on the spot, with another succumbing to injuries later at the hospital. One soldier was also injured during the confrontation.
Furthermore, four company vehicles were set on fire by the miners.
Ghanaian President John Mahama has ordered an investigation into the incident, emphasizing the need to bring those responsible to justice. He has also directed AngloGold Ashanti to cover the medical expenses of the wounded and facilitate the burial arrangements for the deceased.
The incident highlights the ongoing tensions between mining companies, security forces, and local communities in Ghana, where unemployment and economic challenges often fuel conflicts.
This incident underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to address the challenges of illegal mining and ensure the safety and security of all stakeholders in the mining sector.
