Elevator accident at S African platinum mine claims 11 lives, injures 75

Tragedy befell the Rustenburg mine in South Africa, managed by Impala Platinum, when an elevator carrying workers suddenly plummeted, claiming the lives of 11 individuals and causing injuries to 75 others, as reported by the mine operators on Tuesday.

The devastating incident took place on Monday evening as more than 80 employees were exiting a shaft at the end of their work shift, according to statements from Impala Platinum.

The mine raised an alarm shortly before 5:00 pm (1500 GMT) when the elevator unexpectedly began its rapid descent.

Impala Platinum clarified that the swift drop was halted by the conveyance counterweight becoming trapped by the jack catches, a safety mechanism designed to prevent lifts and underground trains from rolling back during emergencies.

Nico Muller, CEO of Impala Platinum (Implats), expressed profound sorrow over the loss, stating, “Our hearts are heavy for the lives lost and the individuals affected by this devastating accident.”

The company confirmed that 75 workers sustained injuries and were swiftly transported to local hospitals for necessary medical care. Johan Theron, spokesperson for Implats, noted that while some individuals suffered severe injuries like ankle and leg fractures, others were fortunate to escape with minor scratches.

Assuring the completion of rescue operations with all 86 employees involved accounted for, the company pledged continuous support to the affected families and injured workers.

Implats suspended all operations at the mine on Tuesday and initiated an investigation into the accident while ensuring ongoing assistance for the affected families and injured workers.

South Africa, renowned as the world’s top platinum producer, has faced recurrent mine accidents due to its substantial mining workforce. Despite advancements in safety standards over the years, incidents resulting in fatalities, such as this elevator plunge, underscore the inherent risks in mining operations.
