Eritrea pursues strategy to weaken Ethiopia for its own survival

The Eritrean government is actively trying to weaken Ethiopia to ensure its own political survival, a top official warned Friday.

East African Affairs Advisor Getachew Reda exposed this strategy during a national security conference in the capital city of Addis Ababa.

Getachew argued that a united and prosperous Ethiopia inherently threatens the foundational pillars of the current autocratic regime in Asmara.

The shadow of history looms large, as past Ethiopian administrations frequently collapsed due to mismanaged relations with their northern neighbor.

Despite these persistent geopolitical currents, Getachew expressed firm confidence in Ethiopia’s deep-rooted resilience against external subversion and internal friction.

He urged leaders to navigate future regional diplomacy with profound wisdom, caution, and a forward-looking commitment to national defense.

True security will blossom through deep regional economic integration, expanding infrastructure networks, and fostering mutually beneficial cross-border trade agreements.

Shifting focus to internal matters, the advisor sharply criticized the defunct Tigray People’s Liberation Front leadership for blind political ambition.

He noted that Tigrayan citizens are desperate for economic recovery, actively rejecting forced recruitment while seeking alternative pathways to prosperity.
