Ethiopia detains 82 suspected IS Somalia terrorists, state media says

Ethiopian security forces have arrested 82 suspected militants linked to Islamic State’s Somalia affiliate, state‑affiliated Fana broadcaster reported on Wednesday.

The National Intelligence Security Service (NISS) statement, shared with Fana, said the suspects were trained in Puntland and deployed to establish sleeper cells and carry out attacks across Ethiopia.

Islamic State’s Somalia faction—estimated at 700–1,500 fighters—has expanded in recent years with foreign recruits and rising revenue, though it remains smaller than the al Qaeda‑linked al Shabaab.

The U.S. military has conducted periodic air strikes against the group, intensifying operations since President Donald Trump took office. Meanwhile, Puntland forces have reclaimed significant territory following a December offensive.
