Ethiopian runner Gudaf Tsegay sets women’s 5000-meter world record

 World champion Ethiopian athlete Gudaf Tsegay on Sunday broke women’s 5000-meter world record in a Diamond League competition in US’ Eugene.

“WORLD RECORD. Gudaf Tsegay smashes Faith Kipyegon’s 5000m world record with 14:00.21 to become Diamond League champion,” World Athletics said on X.

Tsegay, 26, smashed the record with a run of 14 minutes and 00.21 seconds to beat Kenyan Kipyegon’s record that she previously set in June during the Paris Diamond League.

The Olympic gold medalist in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 games, Kipyegon, 29, had clocked 14 minutes and 05.20 seconds to be the previous record holder in women’s 5000-meter.
