Ethiopian transforms traditional honey craft into modern firm

In the lush landscape of Ethiopia, a young entrepreneur is transforming a traditional craft into a thriving modern enterprise.

Amanuel, an engineering graduate, has revitalized the country’s ancient honey industry through his company, Ayat Honey Agro-products.

Growing up on a family farm, Amanuel developed a deep connection to the land and a passion for community.

He soon realized that his technical training could solve complex challenges within Ethiopia’s sustainable food and agriculture systems.

Despite his vision, the twenty-eight-year-old entrepreneur faced daunting barriers, including limited access to essential financing and market opportunities.

With determination, he launched his business at the Gulele Botanic Center, gathering golden rewards from his expanding beehives.

To scale his operation, Amanuel sought strategic guidance from the youth economic empowerment initiative led by SOS Children’s Villages.

The program provided the vital seed funding and coaching necessary to modernize his production and reach new customers.

Equipped with refrigeration and new packaging, he successfully launched Birz Honey Drink, which increased his total sales by twenty percent.

His business model now supports regional beekeepers, effectively strengthening local supply chains and creating income for small-scale producers.

This success underscores the potential of youth-led innovation, bolstered by partnerships like the Green Growth initiative with Canada.
