Former Cameroon star Samuel Eto’o has been handed a four match ban and fined $20,000 after being found guilty of misconduct by a Confederation of African Football disciplinary panel.
In a statement, Caf said Eto’o, now president of Cameroon’s football federation, violated principles of sportsmanship during the Africa Cup of Nations quarter final between Cameroon and hosts Morocco.
The former Barcelona and Inter Milan striker was seen reacting angrily to several refereeing decisions as Cameroon lost 2–0, with his gestures drawing attention in the stands. Caf president Patrice Motsepe was also present at the stadium in Rabat and appeared to witness Eto’o’s frustration.
Earlier this week, Caf announced it had opened an investigation into what it described as violent confrontations and unacceptable behaviour involving players and officials during the quarter final matches.
Cameroon’s football federation rejected the ruling, saying the disciplinary process raised serious concerns over the basic requirements of a fair trial. In a later statement, the federation expressed full support for Eto’o and indicated that an appeal against the sanction was likely.
Since taking office in 2021, Eto’o’s tenure has been marked by repeated controversy. Despite his status as one of Africa’s greatest footballers, his leadership has faced criticism over allegations of misconduct and claims of serious irregularities within the federation.
Eto’o has consistently denied the accusations, pointing instead to what he describes as reforms and achievements under his leadership.
