An explosion struck a mosque during evening prayers on Wednesday in Maiduguri, the capital of Nigeria’s Borno state, according to a witness.
There was no immediate information on casualties, and authorities had not issued an official statement at the time of reporting.
Maiduguri has long been at the centre of an Islamist insurgency led by Boko Haram and its offshoot, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). The conflict, which began nearly two decades ago, has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions across northeastern Nigeria.
No group has claimed responsibility for the blast. However, armed groups have previously targeted mosques and other crowded locations in Maiduguri, using suicide bombings and improvised explosive devices.
Boko Haram launched its uprising in Borno state in 2009, aiming to establish an Islamic caliphate. Despite repeated military operations and regional security cooperation, sporadic attacks continue to pose a threat to civilians in the region.
