The United Kingdom has expressed serious concern over the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan, where famine is spreading and millions face acute hunger.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Foreign Secretary David Lammy cited a recent report by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IFSPC), which warns of a significant surge in acute malnutrition and the potential for famine to spread further in North Darfur.
“Urgent action is needed to find a political solution and prevent further suffering,” Lammy emphasized.
The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces has had a devastating impact on the country, displacing millions and leaving over 25 million people in need of humanitarian aid.
The Famine Review Committee has called for a swift resolution to the conflict, unhindered access for humanitarian aid, and a significant scaling up of nutrition interventions to address the critical needs of the Sudanese people.
