Flood death toll in Angola rises to 29 as thousands affected

At least 29 people have died after torrential rains triggered severe flooding in Angola’s Benguela and Luanda provinces, authorities said on Monday, with thousands affected and widespread damage reported.

According to Angola’s Civil Protection and Firefighting Services, 17 people were injured and three remain missing following the heavy downpours.

The coastal province of Benguela recorded the highest toll, with 23 deaths, 13 injuries, and two of the missing. In the capital Luanda, six people were killed and one person is still unaccounted for.

Authorities said more than 33,000 people have been affected across the two provinces. Floodwaters inundated at least 6,752 homes, while 201 houses collapsed in Benguela alone.

The disaster also caused significant material damage, including destroyed boats and vehicles in Benguela. In Luanda, flooding disrupted telecommunications, electricity, healthcare and education services, while landslides and fallen trees were also reported.

Officials continue to assess the full scale of the damage as emergency teams respond to the crisis.
