Former Guinea dictator recaptured after jailbreak attempt

Former Guinea military junta head, Moussa Dadis Camara, was swiftly recaptured following a failed jailbreak attempt by a heavily armed commando, along with two other officials on trial for a 2009 massacre.

The army and Camara’s lawyer confirmed his return to prison after the chaotic incident in Conakry.

The justice minister revealed the armed men forcibly entered the prison, taking four prisoners, including Camara, before the borders were sealed.

The army denounced the operation as disruptive to government reforms, affirming allegiance to the current military-led authorities.

Masked and armed soldiers, reportedly familiar with the prison layout, declared their intention to “free” Camara, prompting concerns for his safety from his lawyer.

Additionally, another individual taken during the operation, Colonel Moussa Tiegboro Camara, was also recaptured.

Guinea, under the governance of military leader Mamady Doumbouya since the 2021 coup, reflects the prevailing trend of military rule in various West and Central African nations, including Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Chad, and Gabon.
