Former Sudanese PM heads civil front to stop war in Sudan

The Preparatory Committee for the meeting of the Democratic Civil Front for Ending War in Sudan agreed to form a leadership body led by former Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok to oversee preparations for a founding conference set to occur in eight weeks.

The agreement established the temporary organizational structure of the Preparatory Leadership Body for the Democratic Civil Front, which chose the name “Taqadum.” This structure includes a leadership body led by Hamdok to carry out supervisory and oversight tasks and to monitor preparations for the founding conference. The leadership body consists of 60 members.

Abdalla Hamdok affirmed his support for the recommendations of the preparatory meeting and its final statement as a first step. He also expressed his readiness to lead the Preparatory Leadership Body, aiming to reach the founding conference.

The Troika countries, which include Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States, have praised the meeting of Sudanese civilian groups, considering it a crucial step toward establishing an inclusive and representative pro-democracy civilian front.

Approximately 100 individuals, including representatives from political, civil, labour, and armed groups, resistance committees, local tribal and religious leaders, convened in Addis Ababa to consolidate pro-democratic forces.

During the extensive deliberations, they addressed various aspects such as politics, economics, humanitarian concerns, and media strategies. The meeting made significant progress by drafting working papers for presentation at the founding conference and resolved to organize specialized workshops in various domains.
