France’s Macron vows deeper South Africa ties

French President Emmanuel Macron vowed cooperation with South Africa towards a “fairer” and “more inclusive” global governance on Saturday. Macron wrote on social media platform X that he reiterated his warmest wishes for South Africa’s G20 summit success. He stated that together they will work to chart a roadmap towards a more inclusive global governance for all nations.

This new cooperation is notably in view of France’s upcoming presidency of the G7 in 2026, which is an important leadership role. The two leaders discussed several international crises, particularly the situations in the Middle East, Ukraine, and the Great Lakes region.

They also agreed to pursue their dialogue and work in close coordination in the lead-up to the United Nations General Assembly. French President Emmanuel Macron also spoke with his Kazakh counterpart, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, on a range of important international issues.

They discussed strengthening their strategic partnership, particularly in the key areas of transportation and energy, following up on previous visits. The phone call followed Macron’s visit to Kazakhstan in November 2023 and Tokayev’s state visit to France last November.
