French forces to completely leave Niger before 2024

France’s Sahel forces commander announced Friday that 1,500 French soldiers would depart Niger by December 31, in line with President Emmanuel Macron’s recent timeframe.

The pullout, initiated last week, followed the removal of President Mohamed Bazoum, a Paris ally, unsettling France’s Sahel strategy.

General Eric Ozanne confirmed the compliance with the presidential deadline, with 282 soldiers already withdrawn.

Large military convoys and non-sensitive equipment are gradually leaving, while significant logistical movements are scheduled next week, involving 2,500 containers.

The smooth operation, coordinated with Nigerien authorities, is facilitated by transparent procedures.

While acknowledging occasional disagreements, both sides prioritize professional cooperation and mutually beneficial solutions.

Colonel Mamane Sani Kiaou emphasized the long-standing collaboration, expressing a desire for the troops’ safe return to Chad.
