Fuel truck explosion kills 8 in southern Nigeria

A fuel truck exploded while residents were trying to siphon petrol out of it in southwestern Nigeria killing at least 8 people, police said on Monday.

The police reported that the fuel truck was involved in an accident on Sunday night in a neighborhood of Ondo state, causing it to veer off the road and topple on its side.

According to Ondo state police spokesman Fumilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the incident occurred when some individuals went to the scene to scoop fuel from the tanker, leading to the catastrophic explosion.

Since the removal of a decades-old subsidy at the end of May, the price of petrol has more than tripled, causing significant financial strain on motorists, households, and small businesses that rely on petrol generators for power.
