Gabon detains eight officers in soldier’s torture death

Eight military officers have been detained in Gabon following the horrific torture and death of a young soldier, Johan Bounda.

The incident, which sparked widespread outrage across the nation, has shaken the junta-led government.

Two high-ranking generals will also face questioning, as announced by the defense ministry after an emergency meeting chaired by coup leader General Brice Oligui Nguema.

Images of Bounda’s mutilated body circulating on social media ignited public fury.

Authorities swiftly responded to the public outcry, promising a thorough investigation.

General Oligui himself visited the victim’s family to express condolences.

Prosecutors allege that Bounda was accused of attempting to rob an officer’s residence.

Reports suggest he was subjected to brutal torture at the headquarters of the military security service, known as B2.

This tragic event comes amidst a series of concerning incidents. Earlier this month, the junta lifted a nighttime curfew imposed after their August 2023 power takeover.

However, just days prior, numerous young protesters were arrested for curfew violations, with some reportedly having their heads shaved as punishment.

General Oligui has pledged to restore civilian rule in Gabon. A new constitution was recently decreed after its approval in a national referendum.

However, a date for new elections remains unannounced, and Oligui has openly expressed his aspirations for the presidency.
