Gabon unveils roadmap for democratic rule

Gabon’s military junta, the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI), has unveiled a detailed timeline for the country’s political transition. The plan, which spans over two years, outlines the steps necessary to restore stability and pave the way for democratic elections.

The CTRI, which seized power in August 2023 following the disputed presidential election, has faced mounting pressure to establish a clear path forward. The new timeline aims to address these concerns by providing a comprehensive framework for the transition process.

Key elements of the timeline include:

  • April 1-30, 2024: National Dialogue to discuss proposed reforms and validate the transition timeline.
  • June 2024: Parliament transforms into a constituent assembly to draft a new constitution.
  • October 2024: Adoption of the final draft constitution.
  • November 2024: Referendum to approve the new constitution.
  • January 2025: Work on the new electoral code begins.
  • Mid-March 2025: Electoral code adopted and promulgated.
  • July 2025: Electoral materials put in place.
  • August 2025: Presidential and legislative elections held.

The CTRI has emphasized that the transition timeline is “indicative” and may be subject to change based on the outcome of the national dialogue. The dialogue, scheduled for April 2024, will provide a platform for Gabonese citizens to voice their concerns and contribute to the shaping of the country’s future.

The junta’s decision to establish a clear transition timeline has been met with cautious optimism by some Gabonese observers. However, others remain skeptical about the junta’s intentions and fear that the transition process could be manipulated to maintain the status quo.

Despite these concerns, the CTRI has expressed its commitment to restoring stability and democracy to Gabon. The junta has pledged to conduct the transition in a transparent and inclusive manner, ensuring that all Gabonese citizens have a voice in shaping the country’s future.

Only time will tell whether the CTRI can successfully fulfill its promises and usher in a new era of democracy and prosperity for Gabon.
