Gabon’s military leader turns down presidential salary

Gen Brice Oligui Nguema, the current military leader of Gabon, recently made a significant gesture by relinquishing his presidential salary and opting solely for a wage as the commander of the republican guard.

He assumed the role of interim president subsequent to the ousting of President Ali Bongo in August this year.

According to a spokesperson for the junta, in an announcement on Wednesday, Gen Nguema made this decision in light of his deep understanding of the pressing social needs and high expectations of the Gabonese people.

Former President Bongo’s 14-year tenure was riddled with accusations of corruption and various financial scandals.

The junta has alleged that the country’s financial status suffered greatly as a result of what they termed “a veritable criminal rampage.”

Aside from forgoing his presidential salary, Gen Nguema also made the decision to curtail public spending by reducing the allowances for lawmakers, eliminating political funds, and cutting session allowances.

This comprehensive approach to financial reform is indicative of a concerted effort to address the country’s economic challenges.

Reports suggest that these measures have significantly contributed to reinstating the Gabonese people’s faith in the country’s leadership.
