Geneva negotiators ‘intensively’ work to solve Sudan crisis

Five nations, alongside the African Union and the United Nations, issued a statement on Wednesday after the first day of US-sponsored peace talks in Geneva, affirming their commitment to the process for Sudan.

“We’re working intensively in Switzerland to support humanitarian access and the cessation of hostilities, aligning with previous Jeddah outcomes and international humanitarian law,” they stated on X.

The statement was jointly issued by the US, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE, the African Union, and the United Nations, all key players in the ongoing peace efforts.

Despite the absence of SAF leader General Abdel Fattah al Burhan, the talks aim to address the ongoing conflict in Sudan, where fighting between Burhan-controlled SAF and the Rapid Support Forces has devastated the country since April 2023.

UN figures report nearly 18,800 deaths and the displacement of close to 10 million people.

The talks, co-hosted by Saudi Arabia and Switzerland, may last up to 10 days, with no public access.
