Ghana has sent additional soldiers to its northeastern Bawku area to contain a fresh outbreak of violence in the long‑running chieftaincy dispute, President John Dramani Mahama’s spokesperson said on Monday.
The feud between the Mamprusi and Kusaasi communities over the appointment of a local chief has fuelled deadly clashes for decades and recently saw gunmen attack schools, killing a Kusaasi chief and three students, local media reported.
Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu said mediation by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, had “almost brought finality” to the conflict, but a recent surge in killings required “drastic action.”
An existing deployment of troops near the Burkina Faso border has been bolstered, though Ofosu did not specify numbers. He also announced a curfew from 1400 GMT to 0600 GMT “until further notice” to restore order and facilitate student evacuations.
