Ghana gears up for African Games glory with $15.2M boost

In a critical step towards hosting the 13th African Games, Ghana’s Parliament has greenlit the 2024 budget, allocating a significant portion – €14 million – to event preparations. This funding boost underscores the nation’s commitment to delivering a successful Games, set for March 2024.

“Ghana is determined to stage an exceptional African Games,” declared Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif. “We’ve made substantial investments in infrastructure and are diligently working to ensure every detail is in place.”

Thirty sporting disciplines will grace the event, including eight serving as qualifiers for the Olympic Games. Demonstration sports add further variety, promising a dynamic spectacle. The Games’ potential reach is immense, as Minister Ussif points out: “We expect over 5,000 athletes, 3,000 officials, 2,000 volunteers, and a global audience exceeding one billion online and offline viewers.”

Confidence in Ghana’s readiness abounds. Minister Ussif expressed optimism, stating, “The Local Organizing Committee has assured us that all key venues will be operational a month before the Games commence.”

However, cautionary notes were also sounded. Kwame Agyenim-Boateng, Chairman of the Youth Sports and Culture Committee, urged the LOC to remain vigilant: “It’s crucial to guarantee complete accessibility and functionality of all facilities before the Games begin.”

With Parliament’s backing and infrastructure improvements steadily progressing, Ghana appears well-positioned to showcase its sporting spirit and hospitality on the continent’s grand sporting stage. As the countdown to March 2024 continues, anticipation for the 13th African Games in Ghana rises with each passing day.
