A Ghanaian witch doctor says he has “released” England captain Harry Kane from a spell after the striker failed to score in England’s goalless World Cup draw with Ghana.
Nana Kwaku Bonsam, who had said before Tuesday’s Group L match that he would cast a spell to stop Kane from scoring, posted a video on social media after the game saying the spell was now over.
“Now I am going to release Harry Kane so that, his next match, he can score. Harry, I will come and visit you. Don’t be offended. We are friends,” Bonsam said.
Kane had scored twice in England’s 4-2 win over Croatia in their opening match, but the Bayern Munich striker was kept quiet against Ghana in Kansas City.
His best chance came deep into stoppage time, when he fired over the bar from close range as England pushed for a victory that would have secured their place in the knockout stage.
Kane said he was not dwelling on the miss.
“I was waiting for an opportunity like that to fall my way,” he said. “It did and I just couldn’t quite get over the ball. But I’ve been a striker long enough to know they don’t always go in.”
England remain on course to advance, while Ghana’s draw gave them a valuable point and left Kane at the centre of one of the stranger storylines of the World Cup.
