UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed strong support for Africa on Tuesday.

He said the continent has been the victim of injustice due to colonialism, slavery, and financial and economic power imbalance.

Guterres emphasized the importance of partnership between the African Union and the UN, calling it “essential” for Africa’s development.

Moussa Faki Mahamat, the chairperson of the African Union Commission, joined Guterres at a news conference.

Mahamat highlighted Africa’s struggles with peace and security, citing the rise of terrorism and extremism.

He acknowledged the economic challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and the war in Ukraine.

He praised Türkiye’s role in supporting grain exports to African countries.

Guterres and Mahamat signed a joint framework agreement on human rights.

The deal aims to strengthen cooperation in promoting human rights across Africa.
