Heavy rains spark mass escape in Nigerian prison

A devastating flood in northeastern Nigeria has led to the escape of nearly 300 prisoners from a jail in Maiduguri.

The flood, caused by heavy rainfall and the overflow of a dam, damaged the walls of the correctional facility, allowing inmates to flee.

According to prison authorities, seven of the escaped prisoners have been recaptured, while operations to find the remaining inmates are ongoing.

The flood has also caused significant damage to other parts of the city, including the state-owned zoo, which was flooded with crocodiles and snakes.

The flood has affected over a million people in Borno state, with hundreds of thousands displaced.

At least 30 people have been reported dead as a result of the disaster.
