Hundreds of ADF fighters killed in strikes – Uganda’s president

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has disclosed that approximately 200 ADF fighters were eliminated by Ugandan troops in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as part of an ongoing military campaign targeting militants associated with the Islamic State group.

President Museveni revealed on social media, previously known as Twitter, that airstrikes had been carried out against the terrorists in Congo, resulting in the death of about “200 of them” during strikes conducted on September 16.

Furthermore, the President hinted at subsequent operations against these combatants, refraining, however, from specifying the details of these further actions.

Ugandan army spokesperson Felix Kulayigye corroborated the President’s statements, confirming that the remarks referred to the ADF jihadists.

In a collaborative effort in 2021, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo initiated military offensives against the ADF in eastern DR Congo. Despite these efforts, the group has continued to perpetrate attacks in both nations.

Tragically, in October of the preceding year, a British man, a South African woman, and their guide were killed during a safari in Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth National Park. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for this attack.

Earlier, in June, an assault on a secondary school in western Uganda led to the loss of 42 lives, including 37 students. This incident was also attributed to the ADF.
