The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has condemned in the strongest terms the alleged use of chemical weapons by Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) under General al-Burhan’s command in the ongoing conflict.
In a statement issued on its official website, IGAD also expressed serious concern over reports of widespread human rights abuses committed by the SAF, including the killings of civilians in Al-Jazeera State and other regions.
“The use of chemical weapons and the atrocities against civilians are reprehensible and demand accountability,” IGAD said, urging that those responsible be brought to justice and stressing the critical need for the protection of civilian rights.
Led by Djibouti, the regional bloc warned of the potential spillover effects of the crisis into neighboring countries and urged all parties to exercise restraint.
IGAD reaffirmed its commitment to peace and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, advocating for inclusive dialogue to preserve Sudan’s unity, security, and stability.
Video evidence circulating online reportedly shows evidence of SAF mass killings in Al-Jazeera State, south of Khartoum, with victims allegedly being thrown into the Nile River or shot. The Canabi community, which includes individuals from South Sudan, Darfur, and Kordofan working in Al-Jazeera’s agricultural sector, has been particularly targeted.
The condemnation from IGAD highlights the urgency of addressing the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan, as the ongoing conflict continues to devastate the civilian population.
