A Congolese soldier fatally shot two colleagues, with a third dying from injuries, during an altercation in Mungazi, North Kivu province, on Monday evening. Several others were wounded.
The incident occurred near the frontline of the conflict with Rwanda-backed M23 rebels, shortly after the soldiers received their paychecks. While many initially suspected M23 involvement, it was confirmed to be an internal military dispute.
Maj. Nestor Mavudisa, Congolese military spokesperson, stated that eight wounded soldiers are being treated and that the perpetrators have been apprehended and will face punishment.
Eastern Congo is a mineral-rich region plagued by around 100 armed groups, including M23 rebels, vying for control. The conflict has led to a significant humanitarian crisis and stretched the Congolese military thin.
