IOM warns of mass deaths in Sudan without urgent aid

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) issued a dire warning on Tuesday about the escalating humanitarian crisis in Sudan.

The UN agency emphasized that inaction could lead to the deaths of tens of thousands of people.

Sudan is currently grappling with the world’s largest displacement crisis, with a staggering one in five individuals forced from their homes.

The conflict that erupted in April 2023 has triggered widespread violence and created famine-like conditions across the country.

As a result, 10.7 million people are internally displaced while 2.3 million have fled to neighboring countries.

Mohamed Refaat, head of the IOM’s Sudan mission, expressed deep concern over the international community’s insufficient response.

He revealed that the organization has received only 21% of the funding required to deliver essential aid to the Sudanese population, which is increasingly vulnerable to hunger, disease, and the devastating impacts of floods.

Refaat stressed the urgent need for a massive and coordinated global effort to avert a catastrophic loss of life.

The IOM is calling on governments and humanitarian organizations to significantly increase their donations to support the millions of people in Sudan who are desperately in need of assistance.
