Security forces in Somalia successfully repelled a coordinated suicide attack by Islamic State militants on a military base in Puntland on Tuesday.
The attack, which involved multiple suicide bombers, is considered the most significant attempted by the group in the country to date.
The incident occurred while the deputy speaker of the Puntland parliament was visiting the base near the town of Dharjaale.
Puntland State TV reported that eight suicide bombers were among those killed, while a military official confirmed nine fatalities and injuries among soldiers.
This attack comes as Puntland prepares for a major offensive against both Islamic State and the al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab.
Security analysts believe this attack may be a preemptive measure by Islamic State to disrupt the planned offensive.
The attack highlights the growing strength and sophistication of Islamic State in Somalia, which has been increasingly active in recent years.
