Terrorists attack two Nigerian military bases, kill four soldiers

At least four Nigerian soldiers were killed in coordinated attacks by suspected Islamist militants on two military bases in northeastern Borno State, security sources told Reuters.

Fighters from Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have long targeted security forces and civilians in the region, displacing and killing tens of thousands.

On Monday night, insurgents struck an army base in Wajiroko, setting military equipment on fire. A soldier stationed there reported at least four deaths, with several others injured, including the brigade commander.

Around the same time, militants attacked another army formation in Wulgo, near the Cameroonian border. Casualty figures from that attack remain unknown.

The Nigerian army has yet to comment, but local militia member Makinta Modu said air force jets were deployed around 10:30 p.m. and killed many ISWAP fighters. It remains unclear if the military regained control of the base.

Despite military offensives and internal rivalries, Boko Haram and ISWAP have escalated attacks in Borno since the beginning of the year. The insurgency in Nigeria’s northeast has persisted for over a decade, amid widespread violence and insecurity across the country.
