Israel’s envoy to Ethiopia ejected from AU event after tensions

srael’s ambassador to Ethiopia, Avraham Nigusse, was ejected from an African Union event this week, sparking outrage.

An Israeli official stated the removal from the Rwanda genocide commemoration was requested by AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Youssouf.

Nigusse asserted on social media that this action introduced anti-Israel politics, misunderstanding historical parallels between Rwanda and Jewish people, noting his invitation from Rwanda.

A spokesperson for Youssouf did not respond to requests for comment regarding the incident.

However, an AU diplomat revealed that the ambassador was removed due to Israel no longer holding observer status.

Israel regained this status in 2021 after two decades but it was suspended in 2023 for review.

The pan-African body maintains strong ties with Palestine, frequently inviting their leaders to address gatherings.

This incident occurs amidst renewed Israeli military action in Gaza, where over 50,000 Palestinians have reportedly been killed.

South Africa, an AU member, has accused Israel of genocide at the International Court of Justice, allegations Israel vehemently denies.
