Kenya probes disappearance of ex-foreign minister Tuju

Kenyan police have launched an investigation into the disappearance of former Foreign Minister Raphael Tuju after his family reported him missing under unclear circumstances, raising fears of a possible abduction.

Tuju and his driver were last seen on Saturday evening while heading to a scheduled radio interview, according to family members. Authorities later found his vehicle abandoned with hazard lights on in Karen, an affluent suburb of the capital, Nairobi. His phone has remained switched off since.

Police said a specialised unit is leading the investigation in coordination with other government agencies to determine his whereabouts. They have appealed to the public for any information that could assist in locating him.

Tuju, a veteran politician who has held several senior government roles, has been locked in a prolonged legal dispute over the auction of properties linked to an unpaid bank loan. The case involves debts exceeding $15 million tied to assets owned by his company, Dari Limited.

In recent weeks, Tuju accused authorities of targeting him, alleging that dozens of police officers raided his Karen property, evicted staff, and took control of business premises. He claimed influential figures were behind efforts to seize his assets—allegations the government has not addressed publicly.

His lawyer, Paul Nyamodi, said Tuju had filed a police report shortly before his disappearance, claiming he was being followed by an unmarked vehicle.

Police also called on Tuju’s family to cooperate fully with investigators, stating that officers had been denied access to his residence. “We urge full cooperation from all parties for a swift and thorough resolution,” authorities said.

The incident has sparked concern among opposition figures, with some alleging foul play. Siaya Governor James Orengo claimed Tuju had been “kidnapped,” while legislator Otiende Amollo urged authorities to act swiftly, warning against the possibility that individuals could target a figure of Tuju’s stature.

The case remains under investigation.
