Kenya seeks UK suspect’s extradition over 2012 Wanjiru murder

Kenya has secured an arrest warrant and will seek the extradition of a British citizen over the 2012 killing of 21-year-old Agnes Wanjiru in Nanyuki, a town that hosts a UK army training unit. Her body was found months later in a septic tank at the Lion’s Court Hotel.

High Court judge Alexander Muteti granted prosecutors’ application for a warrant, ruling that murder is an extraditable offence and that there is probable cause to bring charges against the accused, Kenya’s Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions said. The suspect was not named.

Wanjiru was last seen with a group of British soldiers; a Kenyan inquest later concluded she was murdered by one or more UK troops. The case has long strained relations and sparked anger among rights groups who say justice has been delayed.

“We are grateful to see the Kenyan government has acted, although it has taken too long,” Wanjiru’s niece, Esther Njoki, said by phone.

Britain’s Ministry of Defence said it remains committed to supporting efforts to secure justice for Wanjiru’s family, declining further comment while legal proceedings are under way.
