Kenyan leaders formalize alliance after months of turmoil

Kenyan President William Ruto and veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga have signed a political cooperation deal, solidifying their alliance amid mounting economic and social tensions.

The agreement, formalized on Friday, follows months of turmoil stemming from Ruto’s unpopular tax proposals, which triggered youth-led protests last year.

Rights groups report that at least 60 people were killed in the demonstrations, pushing Ruto to seek broader political support.

The two leaders pledged to work together to address Kenya’s pressing issues, including economic instability, corruption, and the country’s mounting debt.

Odinga, an enduring figure in Kenyan politics who has unsuccessfully run for president five times, described the deal as a step toward easing national tensions and prioritizing the concerns of the youth.

“We agree to embark on steps to realign the country’s economic, social, and political priorities to address the youth agenda,” said the 80-year-old opposition leader.

Ruto framed the alliance as a move toward national unity, stating, “This is a path to the promised land where freedom and opportunity is guaranteed for all.”

However, critics argue the partnership is a strategic maneuver to stabilize Ruto’s presidency amid growing public discontent.

Political analyst Barrack Muluka labeled the alliance an effort to “salvage a collapsing regime,” noting Ruto’s unfulfilled promises and governance failures.

Further complicating matters, Auditor General reports have raised concerns over Ruto’s flagship projects, including a costly health insurance scheme and housing initiative.

Meanwhile, political experts warn that Odinga’s alignment with the government has left the country without a robust opposition, potentially weakening parliamentary oversight.

This is not the first time Odinga has joined forces with a sitting government. In 2018, he struck a truce with then-President Uhuru Kenyatta—a move Ruto, then deputy president, vehemently opposed.
