Kenyan Member of Parliament Charles Were was fatally shot in Nairobi on Wednesday night, according to multiple local media reports.
Citizen TV reported that Were, who represented the Kasipul constituency in western Kenya, was targeted by two assailants riding a motorcycle.
The attack occurred around 7:30 p.m. local time, when one of the gunmen dismounted and shot the lawmaker at close range.
Were was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival, while his driver reportedly survived the ambush.
The Nation and The Standard newspapers also confirmed the killing, which has sent shockwaves through Kenya’s political community.
Were was a member of the opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), led by longtime political figure Raila Odinga.
Odinga, who contested the 2022 election results against President William Ruto, has since engaged in dialogue to address national grievances.
The motive behind the killing remains unclear, and authorities have yet to release an official statement on the investigation.
Tensions are simmering as citizens demand accountability and swift justice for the slain MP, whose death marks a grim chapter in Kenya’s political landscape.
The attack highlights growing concerns about insecurity and political violence in the East African nation.
