Kenya’s Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, is facing impeachment threats from lawmakers, fueling speculation of a major rift with President William Ruto. Accusations against Gachagua include undermining the government, fostering ethnic divisions, corruption, and involvement in violent protests earlier this year.
Gachagua, who played a key role in Ruto’s 2022 election victory, now finds himself politically isolated as lawmakers prepare to push for his removal. Despite support from his Mount Kenya base, he faces opposition from legislators aligned with Raila Odinga, whose party has joined the government after recent anti-tax protests.
Interior Secretary Kithure Kindiki, a trusted Ruto ally, appears to be taking on more responsibilities, further sidelining Gachagua. Meanwhile, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations has targeted Gachagua’s allies, accusing them of instigating protests, intensifying his political woes.
The president, while weighing the risks, may still hold the key to Gachagua’s political future.
