Kenya’s deputy president hospitalized during impeachment trial

Kenya’s Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, is “very sick” and receiving treatment in hospital, his lawyer informed the Senate on Thursday, as Gachagua missed a crucial impeachment trial session.

Last week, the National Assembly voted to impeach Gachagua, who was instrumental in President William Ruto’s electoral victory two years ago. However, tensions have arisen between Gachagua and Ruto’s allies, who accuse him of disloyalty and making controversial public remarks.

Gachagua was expected to respond to the 11 charges against him before the Senate, which will soon decide on his potential removal from office.

“Regrettably, the Deputy President of Kenya has fallen gravely ill. As I speak to this honorable Senate, he is currently in the hospital,” his lawyer Paul Muite announced.
