Landslide claims 10 lives in Ethiopia

A devastating landslide in the Amhara region of northern Ethiopia has claimed the lives of ten people, according to local authorities.

The Amhara Media Corporation (AMC) reported that the landslide occurred on Saturday in the North Gondar zone, displacing thousands of residents. Four bodies have been recovered from the mud, while eight others are receiving medical treatment for serious injuries.

Local officials have stated that approximately 2,400 people have been displaced by the disaster and are currently seeking shelter in local social institutions.

The landslide is the latest in a series of natural disasters to strike Ethiopia due to heavy seasonal rains. A recent United Nations report warned of increased risks of flooding and landslides across the country.

In July, a massive landslide in the southern Ethiopian community of Kencho Shacha Gozdi resulted in the deaths of 229 people. Subsequent landslides in the Gishere district and the Kawo Koisha district have also claimed lives.
