Landslide in Cameroon kills at least 23 people

Heavy rainfall on Sunday night triggered a landslide that caused significant damage to the Mbankolo neighborhood of Cameroon, situated approximately 25 km from Yaoundé.

As of now, 23 fatalities have been officially confirmed.

According to a report from a public broadcaster, the torrential rain led to the rupture of an embankment within the neighborhood.

Daouda Ousmanou, the divisional officer overseeing the Yaoundé district where Mbankolo is located, has issued a warning that the death toll may still rise.

He also added that firefighters were present at the scene, supervising a search and rescue operation.

Local residents estimate that approximately thirty houses have been destroyed.

The bodies of the victims have been placed in a morgue, while the injured have been swiftly transported to hospitals.

The Yaoundé General Hospital has reported receiving 12 injured individuals, including a 7-year-old girl.

In Yaoundé, a city characterized by its hilly terrain and the occasional presence of precarious dwellings, mudslides during the rainy season are unfortunately a common occurrence.

Cameroonian authorities have been taking measures to demolish structures located in high-risk zones vulnerable to floods and landslides.

Many of the buildings that collapsed on Sunday had already been marked for demolition.
