Libya government on high alert amidst potential attack

The internationally recognized Libyan government is bracing for a possible military incursion near its borders with Tunisia and Algeria.

According to local media reports, the deputy chief of staff, Salahuddin al-Namroush, has ordered troops to be on high alert in response to intelligence suggesting an imminent attack by forces loyal to the rival eastern administration.

Libya has been embroiled in a protracted civil war since the 2011 overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi.

The country is divided between the UN-backed government based in Tripoli and a rival administration led by Khalifa Haftar, which controls much of eastern Libya.

Previous attempts by Haftar’s forces to seize Tripoli have been unsuccessful.

Recent reports indicate that forces affiliated with Haftar are advancing towards southwestern Libya, an area under the control of the Tripoli government.

These claims have heightened tensions and prompted the deployment of additional troops to the region.

General Saddam Haftar, the strongman’s son, has confirmed the movement of forces to the border area, citing the need to enhance national security.

However, the Tripoli government views this as a provocative act and a potential precursor to a larger offensive.

The situation remains volatile, and the possibility of renewed hostilities between the two factions poses a significant threat to stability in Libya and the wider region.
