The LIV Golf series will hold its inaugural African tournament at Steyn City near Johannesburg from March 20 to 22 next year, organisers announced Saturday. A multi-year contract secures an annual LIV Golf South Africa event, celebrating a nation famed for legends like Grand Slam champion Gary Player.
Stars in the LIV stable include major winners Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson, Jon Rahm, and Sergio Garcia, alongside South African champions Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel. “It is always special to compete at home, and I am incredibly proud to bring LIV Golf to South Africa for the first time,” Oosthuizen said.
Chilean Joaquin Niemann, without a major title, leads LIV with six victories, showcasing the tour’s emerging talent. The addition of South Africa expands LIV Golf’s reach to five continents, backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
Unlike traditional 72-hole tournaments, LIV events last 54 holes over three days, combining individual and team competitions for a dynamic format. Ross Hallett, senior LIV official, described the move as a “significant moment,” highlighting growth across Asia, Europe, Australasia, North America, and now Africa.
The breakaway tour debuted in 2022 with LIV Golf London, won by Schwartzel, who famously led the Masters leaderboard eleven years earlier. With its bold new stage in South Africa, LIV Golf aims to captivate fresh audiences and reshape the global golf landscape.
