M23 rebels to restore order in Congo’s Bukavu after looting

M23 rebels, backed by Rwanda, seized control of Bukavu on Sunday, causing widespread looting.

The move marks a significant escalation after the rebels captured Goma in January, threatening Congo’s authority.

Following the withdrawal of Congolese and Burundian troops, a power vacuum led to chaos, including a prison break.

In response, M23 vowed to restore security. “Our forces are working to protect the people and their property,” a rebel statement said.

However, local residents are struggling. Shopkeeper Zozo Sakali lamented the loss of his merchandise: “The thugs took everything. I don’t know how I’ll repay my loan.”

The conflict over eastern Congo’s mineral wealth, including cobalt and copper, continues to fuel tensions.

Despite accusations from Congo, Rwanda denies supporting the rebels, claiming it is defending against militia threats.

Fears of a regional war grow as M23 gains more territory.
