Madagascar reels from storm as Mayotte prepares for recovery

Tropical Storm Dikeledi has moved away from the French territory of Mayotte after causing torrential rains and flash floods in Madagascar, resulting in three fatalities.

Dikeledi made landfall in northern Madagascar as a cyclone on Saturday evening before weakening.

Meteo-France reported that the storm was moving away from Mayotte, which had been placed on red alert in anticipation of its passage.

In Madagascar, torrential rains battered the northern region, particularly Antsiranana province, causing significant damage. The National Office for Risk and Disaster Management reported three fatalities and over 900 people affected.

Mayotte, which was severely impacted by Cyclone Chido in December, experienced strong winds and heavy rainfall.

Authorities in Mayotte issued a red alert, restricting movement and implementing precautionary measures.

The storm is expected to intensify further as it moves south-southwestward over the Mozambique Channel.

This event highlights the significant impact of tropical storms in the region and underscores the importance of preparedness and disaster response measures.
