Malawi declares state of disaster due to severe drought

Malawi has officially declared a state of disaster due to a severe drought gripping most parts of the country. This declaration follows a similar move by neighboring Zambia just a month ago, indicating the widespread impact of the drought across the region.

Zimbabwe has also suffered significant crop losses as a result of the drought, compounding the agricultural challenges faced by the region.

President Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi has appealed for over $200 million in humanitarian aid to address the crisis. The United Nations’ World Food Programme has warned of an imminent hunger crisis in several southern African nations, attributing it to the adverse effects of the El Nino weather phenomenon.
