In a demonstration of solidarity with Niger, which is currently under the authority of the coup leader who ousted the elected government, Mali and Burkina Faso will dispatch a combined official delegation.
“Burkina Faso and Mali are sending a delegation to Niamey,” the Malian army said. “The aim: to demonstrate the solidarity of the two countries with the brotherly people of Niger.”
According to Niger’s foreign ministry, the delegation is anticipated to reach Niger on Monday.
The coup leaders disregarded the Sunday deadline set by the West African bloc ECOWAS, which demanded the restoration of the democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum or warned of potential military intervention.
Mali and Burkina Faso, both of which experienced military takeovers in 2020 and 2022, issued a joint statement cautioning that they would view military intervention as tantamount to a declaration of war.
