Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani won re-election with 56.12% of the vote, according to the National Independent Electoral Commission.
Human rights activist Biram Ould Dah Abeid came second with 22.10%. Opposition Islamist leader Hamadi Ould Sidi el Moctar secured third place with 12.76%.
Other candidates included El-Aid Ould Mohamedan (3.57%), Mamadou Boukari (2.39%), Atouma Soumare (2.06%), and Mohamed Lemine El Mourtaji El Wafi (1%).
With a turnout of 55.39%, Mauritanians chose from seven candidates.
Opposition candidate Dah Abeid rejected the results, alleging fraud.
The Interior Ministry reported quelling riots following the announcement. Mauritania, with a history of coups, saw its first peaceful power transfer between elected presidents in 2019.
