Mayotte families struggle to rebuild after cyclone, cite lack of aid

A week after Cyclone Chido devastated the French Indian Ocean island of Mayotte, residents, still reeling from the destruction, are facing immense challenges in rebuilding their homes and lives.

Ahmed Attoumane’s house was severely damaged by the cyclone, with the roof and walls completely torn away. Despite the devastation, he and his family are forced to sleep on makeshift beds on the floor, with little relief in sight.

The father of five expressed his fears of burglary and intrusion, as he and his 18-year-old son work tirelessly to salvage what they can and rebuild their home. “We’re suffering. There’s no water, no electricity, no candles, and we don’t even know where we can go to the toilet. Our lives have completely changed. Up until now, there’s been no help,” he said.

As many other residents share similar struggles, the lack of assistance is a growing concern. Ahmed has been forced to borrow resources from friends and neighbors to begin the painstaking process of rebuilding.

“We’ve been here for four or five days like this. No one has come to help us. You’re the only ones who have checked on us,” said his son, Djoche Ahmed.

With the rainy season approaching, families like theirs are increasingly worried about their ability to complete repairs in time, highlighting the urgent need for aid and support.
