184 former Facebook content moderators in Kenya are currently in a legal battle with Meta, citing concerns over poor working conditions and inadequate pay.
Their legal representative has accused Meta of insincerity in attempting to resolve the matter outside of court, following failed mediation efforts.
Employed by Sama, these moderators were tasked with screening user content in various African languages, frequently encountering disturbing material during their shifts.
Despite the demanding nature of their job, they were reportedly compensated with a monthly wage of $414, which they argue is insufficient given the mental toll of their work.
The case is ongoing, with a scheduled hearing on October 31 where the moderators plan to pursue a contempt of court charge against Meta and Sama.
This lawsuit marks a significant legal challenge against Facebook outside the United States, highlighting broader concerns regarding the welfare of content moderators globally.
Both Meta and Sama have maintained their stance on their employment practices.
