In a daring prison break on Friday night, more than 100 inmates escaped from a high-security prison in central Chad, leaving three people dead and several others wounded. The incident occurred at a penitentiary located five kilometers from the town of Mongo, in the Guera province.
According to local officials, the violent uprising began when prisoners overpowered guards and seized firearms from a manager’s office. A shootout ensued, intensifying the chaos. As the altercation unfolded, the governor of the region, who was visiting the facility, was caught in the crossfire and sustained injuries.
Hassan Souleymane Adam, secretary general of Guera, confirmed that three people had died, including one guard. The number of escaped prisoners has been reported as 132, far exceeding initial estimates. Officials revealed that the uprising was sparked by the prisoners’ complaints about inadequate food provisions.
Chad’s Justice Minister Youssouf Tom has announced plans to visit the scene and provide further updates. He indicated that more detailed information would be available once he arrives in Mongo.
The incident has raised concerns over prison conditions and security in Chad, as authorities begin efforts to track down the escapees.
