Morocco: 60% of terrorism victims worldwide are in Sub-Saharan Africa

Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita stated that 60% of terrorism victims worldwide are in Sub-Saharan Africa.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bourita addressed the opening session of the Marrakech Platform held in the city of Fez with the participation of heads of counterterrorism and security agencies in Africa.

Bourita emphasized, “60% of terrorism victims worldwide are in Sub-Saharan Africa. This indicates that the terrorism threat in Africa is worsening.”

The Moroccan Foreign Minister also noted that West Africa alone witnessed over 1800 terrorist attacks in the first half of last year.

Praising the continuous and positive development of the Marrakech Platform in terms of both content and participation, Bourita mentioned that about 60 delegations from African countries, regional and international organizations, as well as member states of the United Nations, participated in the third session of the platform held this year.

The “Marrakech Platform,” a joint initiative of Morocco and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, was launched in 2022. The platform aims to facilitate exchange of ideas among leaders of counterterrorism and security agencies in Africa and evaluate strategies to combat terrorism.
